A van load of midget players were heading to a a game in Douro and were traveling north on highway 28 just south of Kawartha Downs. As they approached the exit from Kawartha Downs, a car pulled out cutting them off. The driver had to brake hard as the car was that close. Following the car north, they observed the car swerving from side to side and generally driving erratically. The car took the on ramp to the 115 highway and the kids were all now concerned that the driver maybe drinking as it was still weaving from lane to lane. At the first bridge, the car veered towards the bridge before cutting back onto the highway. Now they were concerned for the safety of all cars on the road and one called the police.
The police requested that they stay on the phone to report all that they could and the police used them as a point of reference. As they neared Peterborough, the police set up trap to pull this car off the road. When the players car was spotted the police quickly moved in and stopped the suspected drunk driver. The midget players pulled over and answered all questions but time was running short and now all they we re concerned about was getting to the game on time. After checking with the police to make sure they could go , they headed to the game.
In the middle of the game , a girlfriend who sat with some of the parents commented on how cool the drive was getting here. This was the first we had heard of it. After the game when time allowed, we finally found out what had happened. They told us the story of what they saw and did. When we all complimented them on doing the right thing, they in typical teen-age difference simply said it was no big deal. They knew what they saw was wrong and what to do to correct it. Look around and you will be pleasantly surprised how this is the norm rather than the exception.
